Project

Description

Antonio Possevino (1533–1611) is one of the most fascinating early modern Jesuits, renowned for his political and diplomatic activities in North and Eastern Europe and the prolific author of widely circulated treatises, pamphlets, and commentaries, as well as the Bibliotheca selecta (1583), his encyclopedic masterpiece. Although he has been often quoted or referred to by recent scholarship and hundreds of articles and books on specific aspects of his life and career have been published, the most recent comprehensive biography written about him dates back to the eighteenth century, a work by the French Jesuit Jean Dorigny (1649–1731). Possevino’s intense political activity, traveling, and networking, as well as his wide-ranging, prolific, and multi-language scholarly production, make it almost impossible for a single author to write an intellectual biography of this iconic Jesuit. The Possevino Collaborative Project recognizes the need for a diverse, interdisciplinary, and collective approach. It aims to create a multi-author biography that leverages the unique skills of an international group of scholars to deepen the understanding of a Jesuit whose life can be considered a privileged prism of his times.

Structure

The Possevino Collaborative Project is divided into three parts:

The life of Antonio Possevino
This section will track the different steps of Possevino’s life, his travels, appointments within the Society of Jesus, and beyond. Possevino’s life will be narrated by different voices; each contribution will follow the same structure and standards to create a homogenous narrative and include an up-to-date bibliography.

Possevino’s Intellectual Journey
This section will dig into different topics connected with Possevino’s intellectual journey, including a thorough analysis of his work, network, and legacy. Each contribution will follow the same structure and standards to create a homogenous narrative and include an up-to-date bibliography.

This section is divided in three subsections:

A full-scale mapping of all Antonio Possevino’s writings will include references to manuscripts and all the editions of his published works (including the anonymous books attributed to him). The bibliography will also provide links to open-access versions of Possevino’s works when possible.

A full-scale mapping of books, articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and book reviews on Antonio Possevino, his life, and his intellectual journey.
