In its history, the Jesuit Educational Quarterly (JEQ) has served educators, administrators, and scholars of Jesuit education to better understand the Jesuit tradition and to reflect on its current contexts. JEQ engages the living tradition with professional peer-reviewed scholarship, digital content, and collaborative opportunities to explore, better understand, and magnify the histories and heritage of the Jesuit educational tradition. JEQ publishes interdisciplinary scholarship and research from various fields (i.e. history, social sciences, education, humanities, etc.) that contribute to the Jesuit educational heritage today.
The revived JEQ consists of open-access scholarly journal articles and a multimedia platform that explore the Jesuit tradition, educational endeavors, and local contexts in order to document and contribute to the living tradition today. JEQ is sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies (IAJS) and published by the Institute of Jesuit Sources, the publishing house of the Jesuit Conference of the United States and Canada.
The electronic version of this journal is available in Open Access. Subscriptions to the print version of this journal are available by emailing the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies.
The Jesuit Educational Quarterly is published on a quarterly basis. Multimedia articles, such as interviews, are published online only on a continuous basis throughout the calendar year. Multimedia articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in making content publicly available.
Founded in 1938, the Jesuit Educational Quarterly (JEQ) served as the flagship journal of the Jesuit Educational Association, the national network of Jesuit schools, colleges, and universities in the American Assistancy. The JEQ provided a forum for scholars, educators, and administrators to engage in research and reflection on Jesuit education at all levels. It functioned both as a repository of knowledge and a dynamic resource for shaping policy, inspiring dialogue, and crafting guidelines that influenced Jesuit educational institutions in the United States and beyond.
For over three decades, the JEQ was a touchstone for those committed to the Jesuit educational mission. Its articles were not only sites of academic inquiry but also instrumental in shaping the evolving landscape of Jesuit education. However, in 1970, the journal ceased publication following the division of the Jesuit Educational Association into separate organizations for higher and secondary education.
In 2022, the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies, with the support of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, undertook the effort to revive the JEQ. The first issue of this new series was officially published in January 2025. Today, the journal continues its legacy as a platform for rigorous scholarship and engaged discourse, broadening its scope beyond the traditional distinctions of higher and secondary education. The JEQ embraces a holistic vision of Jesuit education, encompassing the diverse forms of learning and formation integral to the Jesuit mission—both within and beyond the classroom.
Through this revival, the JEQ reaffirms its role as a living resource, honoring its history while shaping the future of Jesuit education as an inclusive, transformative, and global apostolate.
